New State Safety Department Discusses Regulations

DSPSLRG

Monday Morning

We had 20 members at Monday’s meeting along with our guest speaker, Secretary David Ross from the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. Steve Millin had another “Happy Buck” for the Badgers still dancing in the NCAA Tournament. Gary Miller announced that we had a successful InterClub to the Noon Club last Tuesday. Jackie King was the 50/50 Raffle winner and she drew the Nine of Hearts, not a winner. Next week’s drawing will have 26 cards with five pay cards and a pot of at least $346.

Secretary David Ross, Department of Safety and Professional Services

Secretary Dave Ross drove up from Madison on Monday morning to join us for breakfast and tell us about the Department of Safety and Professional Services. Governor Scott Walker signed the 2011-13 state budget, creating the new Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) – formed by combining the Department of Regulation and Licensing and parts of the Department of Commerce.

DSPS is responsible for ensuring the safe and competent practice of licensed professionals in Wisconsin. The department also administers and enforces laws to assure safe and sanitary conditions in public and private buildings. It provides administrative services to the state occupational regulatory authorities responsible for regulation of occupations and offers policy assistance in such areas as evaluating and establishing new professional licensing programs, creating routine procedures for legal proceedings, and adjusting policies in response to public needs.

The Department licenses and regulates more than 200 different types of credentials. The agency also provides centralized administrative services to nearly 100 boards, councils, and advisory committees. The boards, councils, and advisory committees have varying levels of responsibility and professional oversight based on statutory provisions.

Monday Morning
We had 15 members and six guests at our Monday meeting back in our regular meet-ing room after the flood. Joining us were our guest speakers Sean Twohig, Jim Bender and Terry Brown and three Fond du Lac High School Key Clubbers, Katie Bucher, Megan Buechel and Luckie Cha. Gary Miller had a groaner for our weekly humor so members are encouraged to find and bring humor to our Monday meetings so we can keep Gary sitting in his chair during the humor section of our meeting. Dave Lefeber was the 50/50 Raffle winner and he drew the Three of Hearts. Not a winner so the pot continues to grow. Next Monday’s game will have 35 cards, eight pay cards and a pot of at least $216.

Sean Twohig – School Choice Wisconsin
School Choice Wisconsin is a non-profit organization that seeks to ensure an honest debate about school choice by providing accurate information on the impact of school choice on families, communities, and schools. A state-wide organization headquartered in Milwaukee, home of the nation’s largest and oldest voucher program for low and middle-income families, School Choice Wisconsin supports expanded educational options for parents through the use of school vouchers, charter schools, and innovative public-private partnerships. Sean Twohig, local proponent of School Choice brought along Jim Bender, President of School Choice Wisconsin and Terry Brown, Vice President of School Choice Wisconsin. School Choice Wisconsin provides comprehensive and timely information on educational options in Wisconsin and voucher programs nationally. The organization’s extensive website is used by reporters, elected officials and staff, and education researchers across the country. School Choice Wisconsin also hosts informational visits to Milwaukee by groups from throughout the country inter-ested in understanding the city’s innovative educational programs.
Jim and Terry entertained questions about why they’re such proponents of school choice and questions about what school choice could do to local school districts. It was an interesting discussion.

Kiwanis Welcomes Relay for Life for Donation Presentation

Monday Morning
We had 21 members and seven guests at our Monday morning meeting. Joining us were four Fondy High Key Clubbers, Megan Buechel, Katie Bucher, Luckie Cha and Bridget Stollfus and three guests from the American Cancer Society, Katie McCormick, Becky O’Brien and Sarah Karweick. Vickie Goldapske had a “Happy $” for her first deer with a bow and arrow, a 9 pointer that weighed in at 162 lbs. Gary Miller reminded members to watch for the Evening Club Spaghetti Dinner at the KC Hall on November 14th. That also can count as an attendance credit and possibly even an InterClub. John Cooper was the 50/50 Raffle winner and he drew the Ace of Diamonds. While that wasn’t a winner it does take another card out of the deck. Next week’s drawing will have 47 cards with nine pay cards and a pot of at least $70.

American Cancer Society, Relay for Life
John Cooper introduced three representatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay for Life Team in Fond du Lac, Katie McCormick, Becky O’Brien and Sarah Karweick. Katie is a full-time ACS employee while Becky and Sarah are volunteer co-chairs for the 2013 Relay for Life in Fond du Lac County. As part of the introduction John also presented a check to ACS Relay for Life in the amount of $1,245, which is the amount raised in the past two year’s Brat Fry at Relay for Life. Katie talked briefly about our local Relay for Life and that 2013 will be the 18th Annual in Fond du Lac County. The 2012 Relay for Life raised $284,385, down slightly from the previous year, but still a tremendous event for our community. The 2013 Relay for Life is scheduled for Friday, August 2nd at Fond du Lac High School. While it seems like that date is forever in the future the planning group for the local Relay for Life is already meeting and planning and will have their first Relay Team Meetings in early January. Apparently success drives from the commitment and energy of the local volunteers and dedicated staff of the regional ACS.
