Living_history13

Monday Morning

There were 14 hearty members at Monday’s meeting along with our guest speaker, Linus Doll.  Jan Krug had two “Happy Bucks” one for Del’s retirement and one for her husband, Mike’s, retirement.  Del is still in ICU but they’re getting him up and moving so hopefully he’ll get to a regular room in the very near future.  Prayers are still welcomed for Del’s ongoing recovery.  John Cooper was the 50/50 Raffle winner for the second week in a row.  He drew the Eight of Clubs so he still wasn’t a winner. Next week’s drawing will have 36 cards with seven pay cards and a pot of at least $212.

Linus Doll

Linus Doll joined us on Monday morning to talk about his life and experiences in Fond du Lac.  Linus will be 88 in April so he has a lot of memories of the current and past Fond du Lac area.  Linus was born in Marblehead, the youngest of 15 children.  He attended Fond du Lac High School and graduated in 1943.  He went to the Navy after high school and was discharged in 1946.  He married his wife in 1948 and they in turn had six children.  Linus reminisced about things like his many jobs but his favorite was at Fond du Lac Lumber.

Monday Morning

We had a very small turnout at Monday’s Road Trip to Moraine Park Technical College (MPTC).  Seven members ventured out and found our destination at the Library at MPTC where we had a bountiful and varied array of breakfast breads, sweet rolls, fruit and beverages.  The students at MPTC were sure to enjoy whatever was left after our meeting.  Gary Miller searched long and hard to bring a piece of humor and did a very nice job with a Christmas themed piece of humor.  There was no 50/50 Raffle on the road so Monday’s drawing will have 40 cards with eight pay cards and a pot of at least $166.

Moraine Park Technical College Library Sciences

Charlene Pettit introduced who is the Moraine Park Technical College Library Services Coordinator.  Hans has been the Coordinator for the past five years after Charlene officially retired and Hans ascended into her role.  Hans has responsibility for all three campus libraries, Fond du Lac, West Bend and Beaver Dam.  Hans talked about the purpose of the MPTC libraries as a resource for students to work on homework, do research for projects and actually work with other students on group projects and video presentations.  During the tour of the library Hans noted that a large computer lab has been relocated to the library area and staffed by library personnel vs. its previous standalone location.  Also noted in the library tour were several private student work rooms within the library that could be used by students for project meetings, video productions and even video conferencing with other campus libraries.  While there were a number of paper books in the library, it was very evident that technology is a significant asset at the MPTC library.

Hans also talked about the new GED testing process that is the responsibility of the library operation.  Effective January 1st, MPTC libraries will become a Pearson VUE testing center and all GED testing will now be done through Pearson VUE in addition to a large number of other testing opportunities for a variety of professional organizations and regulatory requirements.

Autism Services Fond du Lac Schools

joined us on Monday morning from the Fond du Lac School District.  Shannon is the Program Support person for Autism Services in the entire Fond du Lac School District and has been in this role for the past three years.  Prior to that Shannon was a special education teacher in Fond du Lac and the West Bend School Districts.  Heather Kraft joined Shannon and she is a Speech Language Pathologist that carries a caseload of students in the three to 21 year old range plus she functions as the Program Support person for the District’s speech department.  Shannon led off by thanking our Club for the generous donations of iPads to autistic students in the Fond du Lac School District.  She noted that there are approximately 115 students in the three to 21 year old classification that have an educational diagnosis that places them under the autistic umbrella in the Fond du Lac School District.  This population makes up about 10% of the total special education population of 1,200 students in the Fond du Lac School District.  Shannon and Heather attempted to access a YouTube video that was done by one of their autistic students did that explained the importance of his iPad in his learning process.  Unfortunately that didn’t work so we’ll try to get that link in a future newsletter for everyone to access if they’d like.
