Monday Morning

We had 18 members at Monday’s meeting along with our guest speaker, Dana Knebel from the Moraine Park Technical College Foundation and five Fond du Lac High School Key Clubbers, Megan Buechel, Ali Gedlinske, Annie Moore, Priya Pathore and Alma Enciso.  President Charlene announced that the Oshkosh Mid-Morning Club is having a 40 Year Anniversary Celebration on November 14th from 5:30 – 9:00PM.  More details to follow but sounds like it might make a good InterClub opportunity.  Happy Bucks were offered by Gary Miller for his birthday, Vickie Goldapske for surviving her first practice as Jack’s 3rd grade basketball coach, Bob Kahl for his son’s victory party after Tuesday’s election, Steve Millin for a Badger road win, Charlene Pettit for a safe trip back to Iowa although for a sad reason and Jim Freiberg for a Wednesday with no political ads.  Gary Ring was the 50/50 Raffle winner and he drew the winning Queen of Hearts.  The pot topped out at $711 so Gary won $355.50.  Congrats Gary.  Next week’s drawing will start all over with 52 cards.  Thanks everyone for playing.

Dana Knebel, MPTC Foundation

Dana Knebel, Director of College Advancement at MPTC joined us on Monday morning to talk about the MPTC Foundation. Established in 1976, the Moraine Park Foundation works to advance the College’s mission within the Moraine Park District by seeking an added measure of financial support used to offset the financial strain felt by Moraine Park students.  Although the majority of funding for the College comes from tax revenues and student fees, these sources do not meet all the needs for student scholarships, emergency financial assistance, or community partnerships. Through the years, the 12-member Foundation Board has significantly grown the Foundation endowment and annual fund and, subsequently, disperses an average of $140,000 in scholarships and $30,000 in emergency aid annually, most of which is gifted by service clubs, community members, and business and industry.

Dana handed out materials that described an exciting new opportunity for friends, alumni, students, staff, faculty and businesses to be part of MPTC’s new Student Services Center addition to the Fond du Lac campus. They invite you to create a lasting memory in honor of a family member, retiree, workgroup, business, student group, loved one, friend, or other important person in your life through a PERSONALIZED BRICK.

The engraved bricks will add life to the walkway around the flagpoles near the new main entrance frequented by students, staff, alumni and community members. The brick pavers are available in two sizes: 4×8 inches and 8×8 inches and cost $100 and $200 respectively.  These engraved bricks can commemorate such events as:

  • Births/Birthdays
  • Memorials
  • Graduations/Retirements
  • Dedications
  • Personal Achievements
  • Slogans/Quotes
  • Honoring Loved Ones
  • Weddings/Anniversaries
  • Business Partnerships

Next week’s drawing will have 5 cards with one pay card and a pot of at least $664.  Good luck everyone.

Marianne Geiger, Wisconsin Bookworms Project

Marianne Geiger thanked our Club for our past donations to the Wisconsin Bookworms project. This program has been in operation in Wisconsin since 1998 and in Fond du Lac County since 2000.  At the State level, the program has given over 500,000 books to children in the program while over 18,000 books have been given to over 2,000 children in Fond du Lac County since its inception in 2000. In Fond du Lac County there are currently 22 volunteer readers who read to four and five year old children in the local Head Start Program at four different locations in the Fond du Lac area. The four locations in Fond du Lac County are North Fond du Lac Friendship Learning Center, the old Franklin School, YMCA and the Head Start Program at the Advocap building.  They also have reached out to the Ripon area where they are currently reading to 30 special needs students in the Ripon School District.  Each child gets eight different books along with a book bag to hold all of their new books. The approximate cost for these eight books and book bag is $30 per child.

Monday Morning

We had 20 members at Monday’s meeting along with our, soon to be, newest member Dawn Scannell.  Eileen Blackburn joined us for a few minutes on Monday morning to thank us for our recent donation to the Galloway House Garden Project and also to hand out a fall bulb package to anyone that wanted one.  Bonnie Baerwald announced that the Community Services Committee is trying to put together a team(s) to help at the October 25th Make-A-Difference Day.  Check with Bonnie if you’re interested or watch for a sign-up sheet at Monday’s meeting.  Marlin Towne asked all members to get their Pork Fest Ticket money to him so he can close the books on what appears to have been a very successful event.   Happy Bucks were offered by Bonnie Baerwald for a successful Walk for Alzheimer’s event last Saturday in spite of the less than ideal weather, Charlene Pettit in honor of Dave Lefeber’s just completed successful year as President, Chris Serres for her Mom going home to her own house and Glen Treml for being back from a successful foot surgery.  Gary Miller was the 50/50 Raffle winner and he drew the Three of Clubs, not a winner. Next week’s drawing will have 7 cards with two pay cards and a pot of at least $629.

New Year – New Stuff

Charlene started her first official meeting as President by officially thanking Dave Lefeber for a successful year as President.  Charlene announced that she would like to maintain the current committee memberships and chairs unless anyone would like to move or take over a committee chairperson responsibility. Let her know ASAP if you’re interested in a change. Charlene also noted that we’re always looking for new members and service project ideas so let anyone on the Board know of new members or new thoughts on how we can better serve our community.

Gary Miller also did a Club in-service on the recently Board approved Child Protection Policy.  This policy outlines how and who will require background checks in compliance with Kiwanis International’s recently implemented Child Protection Guidelines.
