Monday Morning
There were 20 members at our Monday meeting along with our guest speaker Dr. Brenda Grass. “Happy Bucks” were offered by Vickie Goldapske for her 20 years as a Kiwanian, Jackie King for her 15 year old granddaughter’s successful bear hunt with her Grandpa and Glen Treml for being back from several meetings away and also for his new granddaughter, Kori Grace. The 50/50 raffle drawing was back and Chris Serres was the winner and she drew the Queen of Hearts and therefore won the pot. The pot was $351 so Chris walks away with $175.50. Congratulations Chris, don’t spend it all in one place. Next Monday’s 50/50 Raffle will start over with 52 cards in the game including the nine pay cards.
Dr. Brenda Grass – Reach Out and Read Wisconsin
Dr. Brenda Grass from Agnesian HealthCare joined us on Monday to talk about the Reach Out and Read Program in Fond du Lac. The national Reach Out and Read Program began in 1989 in Boston, MA by a group of medical residents that recognized the need to encourage reading by children at a very early age. This program is designed for the 6 months to five year old child. The national organization builds on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers to develop essential early literacy skills in young children via the existing healthcare infrastructure. Each year Reach Out and Read serves over four million children across all 50 states, focusing on those in low-income families.
The Wisconsin Chapter of Reach Out and Read currently has over 146 clinic locations, representing 46 clinics or clinic systems in 45 counties, more than 1,000 physicians, nurse practioners and physician assistants and they serve more than 57,200 children annually. The program distributes over 100,200 new, developmentally appropriate books annually in the State of Wisconsin.
Sharon Kollman and Dawn Scannell from the Young Children Priority One Committee presented Dr. Grass with a donation of $900 to help fund this wonderful program to help improve the literacy of our community’s youngsters.
