A Sports League Making Miracles

Monday Morning

There were 14 members plus one guest at Monday’s meeting. Steve Arnold was our guest speaker. John did the grace. Charlene had the humor. Happy bucks from John to welcome Jackie back. Charlene had a happy buck for her great trip out East. Harry and Marlin reminded everyone to sell tickets. We have plenty of tickets and posters. Sharon was winner and loser. She drew the King of Hearts. There are still 30 cards with a pot of $235.00.  Remember that we have a Kiwanis web page and Facebook. If you are on Facebook, you can like our page.

Mike Arnold, The Miracle League

The Miracle League is an organized baseball league for children ages 4 – 19 with physical and/or cognitive disabilities. The rubberized surface of Miracle League fields accommodates the use of wheelchair and other assistive devices to increase mobility and safety. Plans are in the making to build the field and a universal playground on Plamore Park in Fond du Lac. The city has approved the project in 2017 with a total cost of one million dollars. They have raised $270,000 with a starting date of 2020. Brooke Industries is the lead organization. They will have their own board of directors. The league games will last about eight weeks. The playground will be open all year round. There about 2,500 individuals in the area eligible to play in the league. We donated $5,000 to Miracle League.

Monday Morning

We had 18 members at our Monday morning meeting along with our guest speaker, Renee Eckberg from Dream Catchers.  Gary Miller was able to put together an InterClub to the New Holstein Spanferkel for Monday night.  “Happy Bucks” were offered by Bonnie Baerwald for a successfully busy “Back to School” event on Saturday at the Boys & Girls Club, Gary Miller also for a successful “Back to School” event and Gary Ring for being in Chicago over the weekend for his grandson’s 1st birthday party.  Glen Treml was the 50/50 Raffle drawing winner but unfortunately he drew the Ace of Diamonds, another non-winner.  Next week’s drawing will have 27 cards with five pay cards and a pot of at least $333.

Renee Eckberg, Dream Catchers

EVERYBODY HITS, EVERYBODY RUNS, EVERBODY SCORES, this is their motto. This is a free league for special needs children that reside within Fond du Lac County, from the ages of 6 to 17, in a wheel chair, walker, blind to cognitive delays are all welcomed.

Dream Catchers is a free league organized by parents, Fond du Lac Softball Inc. (FSI), and the Fond du Lac School District Recreation Dept. Funding and volunteers are provided by the Fond du Lac Eagles Club, Waupun Christian Schools, Fond du Lac Youth Baseball, and St. Mary’s Springs Girls Softball.

All participants get a free T-shirts.  Each player is assigned a ‘buddy’ to help them bat and field. Each player should bring a glove and must arrive 30 minutes before game time. A parent or designated adult must remain at the game.  However, all parents need to watch from the stands as the coaches and the “buddies” help the players with everything they need to do on the field.

Renee Eckberg founded the league in Fond du Lac and would love to see it emulate the “Miracle League” in Ashwaubenon.
