Monday Morning

We had 18 members and our guest speaker, Courtney Kolb, from ASTOP at our Monday meeting…  A “Happy Buck” was offered by Gary Miller just because he was happy and it wasn’t drug induced.  Vickie Goldapske was the 50/50 Raffle drawing winner on Monday and she drew a non-winning Eight of Diamonds.  Next week’s drawing will have 32 cards with five pay cards and a pot of at least $249.

ASTOP Sexual Abuse Center serves individuals, families and communities and helps them heal from the trauma of sexual assault in the Fond du Lac and Green Lake communities.

ASTOP’s Mission is a sexual assault service provider offering treatment, outreach, prevention, and advocacy, emphasizing hope and connection to self and others.

It is estimated one in four women and one in six men are sexually abused before their eighteenth birthday; the average age of abuse for a female is 13 – 17 years old and 4 years old for a male.

Although these numbers are shocking, ASTOP assists survivors of sexual abuse to break through the negative consequences their abuse can have.  They offer HOPE, HEALING, and WHOLENESS for victims and families through trained, professional staff and caring volunteer support.

Courtney has been with ASTOP for about two years and has just moved into a Case Manager role from her previous Prevention Educator Role.

Marsh Haven Nature Center is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization. This non-profit, all-volunteer, community-supported nature center features quality displays and exhibits depicting the history and wildlife of the Horicon Marsh area. Wildlife feeding stations are located on either side of the gift shop and their visitors often see a variety of birds up close. In addition, they have an art gallery where a diverse collection of wildlife art and photography is on display. The Nature Nook Children’s Area offers our young visitors an area to learn and explore. Visit with the furry, scaly and feathered creatures in the Critter Corner.6

This beautiful center offers information about the ecology, history and wildlife of Horicon Marsh, as well as offering nature hikes, educational and outdoor programs on its 46-acres. Marsh Haven provides a well-rounded, enjoyable experience for all visitors.

Marsh Haven Nature Center is located at the north end of the famous Horicon Marsh, just 3 miles east of Waupun, Wisconsin on Highway 49.

Renee talked about the 305 different species of birds that are sighted in the Marsh and the number of visitors they’ve had from all over the world who come to see this wonderful place.  Renee also have us a season by season description of what one could expect to see at Marsh Haven if they came out during the various seasons of the year.  Very nice program.

Monday Morning

We had 17 members and our guest speaker, Katie McCormick from the American Cancer Society.  “Happy Bucks” were offered up by Charlene Pettit for a weekend trip back to Iowa for a wedding and family get together but a rainy drive home and also by Steve Millin for not only his and Mary’s wedding anniversary but also in celebration of his in-laws 68 year wedding anniversary celebration over the past weekend.  John Cooper was the 50/50 Raffle drawing winner on Monday but he drew a non-winning Seven of Spades.  Next week’s drawing will have 34 cards with six pay cards and a pot of at least $224.

Katie McCormick, American Cancer Society

John Cooper introduced Katie McCormick, our local representative for the American Cancer Society (ACS) and also the local Relay for Life ACS Coordinator.  John & Charlene presented Katie with a check from our efforts at last year’s Relay for Life Brat Fry.

Katie then talked about the history of the local Relay for Life.  The local Relay started 30 years ago in 1985 and raised only $19,500.  Last year’s Relay raised over $210,000, even with the ugly weather they had, and over the past 30 years they’ve raised over $5.7M.  ACS estimates that over 400 lives a day are saved as a result of the funds raised by the various Relay for Life events held around the county.  Katie also noted that ACS gets 70 cents of every $1 raised back into patient related programs, many of which our local citizens are able to take advantage of right in our local community.
