Recent Donations of Time and Money Aid Local Organizations

Kiwanians never rest. Over the past two months we have dedicated our time and energy to aid three different local organizations in Fond du Lac. Please don’t forget about supporting our upcoming fundraiser at Walleye Weekend.

On April 14th several Kiwanians donated portions of their Saturdays to run a brat fry at PDQ in North Fond du Lac. The efforts of these men and women generated $1,100 for the organization seeking to save the Taylor Park Pool in Fond du Lac.

Kiwanis One Day Service Project was last Saturday, May 12th at the ARC building on North Park Avenue. The fun began with breakfast at the ARC and after a few logistical glitches were corrected the painting began in earnest. The entire building received two coats of paint and according to Executive Director, David Boelter, it looks absolutely beautiful. According to an email from David, the three FDL Kiwanis Clubs saved the ARC approximately $16,000 in painting costs while applying 110 gallons of paint to the ARC building.

Bowling with unmatched Big Brothers/Big Sisters on Sunday, May 20th, at Karl Ray Lanes also recently completed. Thanks go out to members John Cooper, Jackie King, Gary Miller, Charlene Pettit, and Chris Serres and her husband, Jim. These along with three Horace Mann Key Clubbers and seven members of the Winter Guard were in attendance helping with this outing. There were about 25 unmatched “Littles” that had a great time bowling and eating pizza. Thanks to the Youth Services Committee for sponsoring this event.

Kiwanis Happenings – May 23, 2012

Monday Morning
We had 18 members and our guest speaker, Deb Hoffman, back at the Ramada on Monday morning. President Gary announced that there is a Walleye Weekend Fundraising Meeting on Thursday, May 24th at Faro’s starting at 6:45AM to finalize many of the Walleye Weekend loose ends. Everyone is invited to attend and provide input. Breakfast is on your own. There also is a Membership Committee on Friday, May 25th at The Oasis starting at 6:45AM. Again, everyone’s invited and breakfast is again on your own. The sign-up sheet for Walleye Weekend made another round. We’re opening on Thursday night this year with the band “Oil Can Harry” on the stage by our tent and they’ll be playing until 10:15PM. If you didn’t see the sign-up sheet it will be at Monday’s Roundtable and again at our meeting on June 4th. Plan on spending a lot of time at Walleye Weekend to help make this event another success. “Happy Bucks” were offered by Pete Vercouteren for former member Steve Hecky, who received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree this past weekend plus he’s retiring this summer. Gary Miller also had a “Happy Buck” for a successful “Bowling with the Littles” on Sunday. Chris Serres won the 50/50 Raffle Drawing but drew the seven of Clubs. So she was a winner and a loser in the same meeting. Sorry Chris. That means there are 42 cards left in the deck with seven pay cards and close to $350.

Deb Hoffman, FDL City Attorney
Deb Hoffmann is the City of Fond du Lac Attorney and Director of the City’s Human Resources Department. Deb gave us a quick tour of her background as an attorney and how she landed in Fond du Lac. Then she talked about how she acquired the role of HR Director and the part she played in the recent recruitment for a new City Manager for Fond du Lac. Deb explained the process they used to engage an external search firm and the techniques they used to publicize and generate possible candidates for the City Manager position. Thank goodness for today’s technology as the eventual choice for the job is stationed in South Korea and was able to learn of the job and apply from half way around the world.
