Monday Morning

We had sixteen members that ventured out for our regular Monday meeting.  Jan Krug had a “Happy Buck” for Del’s upcoming heart surgery.  Prayers are welcome for Del’s speedy recovery.  John Cooper drew the Nine of Diamonds in the 50/50 Raffle, not a winner. Next week’s drawing will have 37 cards with seven pay cards and a pot of at least $195.

Dan Leeds – Christmas Prophecies

Dan Leeds is pastor of Trinity Baptist Church and Kiwanis of Fabulous Fond du Lac member. His presentation of Christmas prophecies focused on the gospel of Matthew. The gospel of Matthew was written with the agenda of proving to the Jews that Jesus was their Messiah, their promised King.  The man Matthew was familiar with the Scriptures:

  • approximately 50 direct quotations from the Old Testament

  • about 75 allusions are made to Old Testament events

  • 25 different Old Testament are mentioned or referred to by Matthew

  • 16 times Matthew writes “might be fulfilled” and most of those times the reference is about Christ

  • nine times Matthew said “it is written”

Dan then talked about two broad areas that helped to frame Matthew’s prophecies regarding Jesus’ birth.  First was “The Virgin Birth”.  Much of this discussion was based on Matthew 1:21-23 and Isaiah 7:1-16 and discussed God’s attempt to convince King Ahaz of Judah not worry about Syria and Samaria attaching Judea.

The second area was Herod’s order to kill all boys two and under in and around Bethlehem. For this area of discussion reliance was placed on Matthew 2:17-18 and Jeremiah 31:15.

Dan’s presentation of the scriptural background provided a very interesting perspective on Matthew’s prophecies regarding the birth of Christ.

Monday Morning

We had fourteen members that braved the bitter cold on Monday for our regular Monday meeting.  We called off our scheduled speaker, Linus Doll, and will bring him back on January 20th.  Vickie Goldapske drew the Ten of Spades in the 50/50 Raffle, which won her a slightly used $10 bill.  Way to go Vickie.  Next week’s drawing will have 38 cards with seven pay cards and a pot of at least $183.

 Roundtable Discussion

Vice President Gary Miller ran Monday’s meeting and asked everyone in attendance to tell a little something about what’s going on in our lives.  Gary started by giving John Cooper a five quart ice cream bucket to start building our inventory in advance of Walleye Weekend.  We use the ice cream buckets to mix cheese curd batter so all members are encouraged to start eating ice cream and bring the empty buckets to a Monday meeting.  Gary also mentioned that the Friends of Taylor Park Pool was holding their Annual Blues Concert Fundraiser on Saturday, February 8th at the Elks Club.  Steve Millin mentioned that Brew Fest is being held at the Fairgrounds on Saturday, February 1st from 5:00 – 9:00PM.  Dan Leeds reminded the group that the Annual Trinity Baptist School Auction is coming up on Friday evening, January 31st at the school.  The Silent Auction and Concessions start at 5:00PM with the live auction starting at 7:00PM.  Bonnie Baerwald shared that she and Lisa had a great vacation in San Antonio and that it was 71 degrees when they left on Saturday and returned to the deep freeze.  Vickie Goldapske noted that Dynamic Chiropractic & Wellness Center was having an Open House on Saturday, January 25th, from 10:00AM – Noon.  They’ll have an Acupuncturist and Massage Therapist on site as well healthy eating demonstrations.  Dave Twohig reminded everyone of the Ski Outing on February 8th and encouraged everyone to bring their kids and/or grandkids for a day of fun.  Del Waldschmidt announced that he fully retired effective the first of January.  Del’s son and son-in-law took over the overnight livery business and someone else took over the county medical examiner work.  Del is now able to sleep through the night. Greg Brunette announced that his tax season will be very different this year as he no longer works at Schenk.  Greg is now the CFO at Jackson Kahl Insurance Agency as of about seven weeks ago.  Not doing taxes from January to mid-April will be very different for Greg. Finally, it was noted that Kyp Buth, a member from a lot of years ago, passed away on New Year’s Day in Milwaukee.

Bob Hyland Discusses St. Mary’s Springs Football Dynasty

Monday Morning

We had a little better crowd on Monday with fourteen members and our guest speaker, Bob Hyland, head football coach at St. Mary’s Springs Academy.  Glen Treml was the 50/50 Raffle winner and Harry Schneider drew the Seven of Spades in Glen’s absence.  That is not a winner so next week’s drawing will have 39 cards with eight pay cards and a pot of at least $181.

Bob Hyland – St. Mary’s Springs Football

Bob Hyland has been the head football coach at St. Mary’s Springs since 1971.  Those first two seasons were less than successful when Bob’s teams went 1-15-2.  However that changed in 1975 when they went undefeated until the State Championship game.  They also were State Champion Runner-Up in 1976, 77 and 78.  Bob’s first State Championship was in 1983 with a second State Championship in 1984.  In the year 2000 St. Mary Springs joined the WIAA.  Since 2000, Bob has coached four State Champions, two Runner-Up State Champions and eight Conference Champions with a combined won/loss record of 146-34.  Up until this year’s loss in the playoffs, S. Mary Springs had a 39 game winning streak.

Bob attributes his success to a number of factors.  The first is the depth and longevity of his coaching staff.  His thirteen assistant coaches have over 170 years of coaching experience with a number of those thirteen having played at the collegiate level.  The second thing that Bob requires is complete honesty with his players so they know where they stand in the program.  Bob doesn’t believe in leading a player to believe he has a chance to play when he doesn’t have the skill to do so.  The third thing that Bob believes is absolutely necessary is to teach good fundamentals to his players at the earliest possible level.  He firmly believes that good fundamentals are what makes winning football programs and helps to minimize injuries to the player.  Bob played for the North Dakota State University (NDSU) football team from 1967-69 and was inducted into the NDSU Hall of Fame in 1981.
