North Fond du Lac High School Key Club

Jean Hintze, NFDL Horace Mann Key Club Advisor, and a number of NFDL Key Clubbers welcomed us on Monday morning for our Annual Appreciation Breakfast.  No one should have gone away hungry as they provided a wonderful variety of bagels, breakfast sweets, various fruit offerings and juice and coffee.  Jean turned the program over to the Key Clubbers and they led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Key Club Creed.  The current officers then introduced next year’s list of officers.  They noted that they had 62 members this year and raised almost $503 from five different fund raisers.  They also detailed all of the activities/money donated back to the community. They donated $2,319 back to a number of causes in addition to a total of over 2,080 hours of volunteer time to a long list of causes/agencies.  The list included things such as Friendship Learning Center Halloween Party, NFDL Optimist Pancake Breakfast, Friendship Learning Center Tutoring, Autism Child Care and many, many more.  The group then talked about a special project (Riley’s Project) that provided household/personal care items to needy families.  The NFDL Key Club also had another banner year of Excellence Award Winners (Five Members) at this Spring’s DCON.  The NFDL Key Club Scholarship Awardees; Riley Behnke, Shelby Demboski, Nicole Fox, Alexus Kraus and Elizabeth Redmond were introduced and gave a brief report of where they’re going to college and what they hope to study.  And finally, the new officers unveiled their goals for next year; new volunteer venues, 10 Excellence Award Winners at DCON, Polar Plunge continued success and continue to collaborate with NHS and Student Council.  GREAT JOB!!

Monday Morning

We had 20 members at our regular meeting on Monday along with our guest speaker, Katie Grinstead from the FDL County Fair Board.  Chris Serres is organizing a new shirt order if anyone is interested.  The new shirts will be gray with a small Kiwanis logo on the front.  Cost will be $10 for a regular T-shirt or $15 for a V-neck.  Let Chris know at next week’s meeting or before so she can get them ordered in time for Walleye Weekend.  “Happy Bucks” were offered by Marlin Towne for his granddaughter’s wedding last Saturday and Gary Ring for finding out that his sweat glands still work.  Bonnie Baerwald was the 50/50 Raffle drawing winner on Monday and she drew the Six of Spades, not a winner.  Next week’s drawing will have 39 cards, including seven pay cards, and a pot of at least $160.

Katie Grinstead, Fond du Lac County Fair

Katie Grinstead  joined us on Monday to tell us about the FDL County Fair and how long she’s been involved with the Fair.  According to Katie the County Fair has changed a lot in the last 10 – 15 years.  She remembered how the various exhibitors used to take up several buildings but now is significantly smaller.  A new feature the past several years is a live birthing display at the County Fair.  Her family farm has brought cows the past two years that potentially deliver their calves during the Fair and if they delivered the general public is able to watch the process.  Katie also said that others brought horses and goats to the birthing exhibit.  She also talked about the Fairest of the Fair competition that’s held every year.  She noted that the competition is open to both males and females although only females have been participating.  There is an application process that includes a 30 second PSA that could be used on the radio.  The applicants go through a full day of interviews with local radio, Fair Board interviews, lunch with all of the applicants and an evening banquet and the final selection of the current year Fairest of the Fair.  The duties of the winner are to promote the County Fair throughout the county and with the local media.  During the Fair itself the winner will greet attendees, participate in various parades and other events as needed.  Three scholarships are awarded to the winner ($750) and first $250) and second ($100) runner ups.

Fondy High Key Club

The Fond du Lac High School Key Club had a member attend the 59th Annual District Convention (DCON) the weekend of March 14th in Green Bay.  The member told us about her experience at DCON, all the kids that attended (over 800) and how it inspired her to get more involved in her local Key Club organization.  She also thanked us for helping her get to go to DCON.

Eleven Key Clubbers then talked briefly about service projects that they participated in and why they found them to be a great thing for their Key Club to do.  Those eleven projects were:

  • Monthly ARC Bingo
  • Shop With A Cop
  • Girl Scout Dance
  • Parkside Knowledge A Thon
  • Story Book Land
  • Monthly YMCA Middle School Dance
  • Make A Difference Day
  • Food Pantry Assistance
  • Parent Back To School Night
  • Rienzi Cemetery Historical Tour
  • Grief Relief Event

Gary Ring officially thanked both Chris and Sandi for all they do for our Club in helping the Key Club members operate this long standing Key Club.  Chris and Sandi also publicly thanked Gary Ring for all that does as our Club’s liaison to the Key Club.

The last item of business on Monday morning was the introduction of the new Officers for the Key Club for next year.  Looks like a great batch of young adults to lead next year’s Key Club members.
