Monday Morning

We had 19 members at our Monday morning meeting at the Retlaw Hotel along with our guest speaker, Tiffany Heim from the Boys & Girls Club.  Gary Miller is looking for an InterClub to Ripon Early Birds on Wednesday, August 12th.  Check your calendar and let Gary know on Monday. “Happy Bucks” were offered by Mark Luttenberger as he is officially retired, Charlene Pettit in thanksgiving for some rain, Dawn Scannell for a successful Relay for Life Rummage Sale with Sharon K and finally, from our guest speaker Tiffany for her incoming presidency of the Noon Kiwanis Club.  Dawn Scannell was the 50/50 Raffle drawing winner. Unfortunately she drew the Eight of Spades, which was a non-winner.  Next week’s drawing will have 30 cards with five pay cards and a pot of at least $280.

Tiffany Heim, Boy & Girls Club

Tiffany Heim is the Director of Resource Development for the Boys & Girls Club and also a fellow Kiwanian from the Noon Club.  Tiffany talked with us about the upcoming 2nd Annual “Spell for Great Futures”.  Spell for Great Futures event is a themed, team spelling bee featuring local business leaders teamed up with their Club members as participants, includes action-packed audience participation, and is planned around a different and exciting theme each year.  This year’s theme is based around the Jurassic Park/World series.  This event raised over $17,000 in its first year in 2014 and they’re expecting bigger and better things at this year’s event on October 14th.  Our Club was encouraged to not only consider a monetary donation but also consider having some of our members act as participating partners with the spelling teams.  Gary Ring did it last year and had a lot of fun.  He encouraged others to consider joining this effort for a great cause.

Monday Morning

We had 10 members at our Monday tour of the Boys & Girls Club in spite of the cold and snowy start to the week.  Gary Miller brought a nice selection of donuts and other goodies along with coffee and juice so no one went away hungry.  There was no 50/50 Raffle drawing on Monday so next week’s drawing will have 51 cards, including eight pay cards, and a pot of at least $1.

Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Fond du Lac

Dan Hebel, Chief Professional Officer of the Boys & Girls Club, welcomed us on Monday morning for a tour of the local Boys & Girls Club.  Dan has been with the local Boys & Girls Club for the past ten years and for the last year and a half as their permanent Chief Professional Officer.  Dan joined the local Boys & Girls Club right out of UW-LaCrosse and has held just about every job at the Club, so he knows the operation from the bottom to the top.

Dan took us on a walking/talking tour of the Club and noted that the Club is divided into two age groups; teens and elementary.  Dan started with the Teen Center (located in the old pool of the YMCA) and told us about the various programming that goes with the Teen population.  Then we moved into the elementary space, which is structured much like an elementary school layout.  Dan talked about how the schedule works for the elementary members and the various things that those kids get to do during their time at the Club.

Dan also talked at length about the partnerships they’ve developed with:

  • Johnsonville Sausage Company
  • Fond du Lac YMCA
  • Fond du Lac School District
  • Fond du Lac Area Foundation
  • Fond du Lac Area United Way
  • 21st Century Learning Center Grants

Without these outstanding partners the Boys & Girls Club couldn’t provide the varied programs they do to the youth of our community.

The Boys & Girls Club operates out of their main location connected to the YMCA and also extension after school programs at Chegwin and Pier Schools.

Monday Morning

We had 19 members along with our guest speakers, Karissa Schneider and Pam Sippel from the Boys & Girls Club of Fond du Lac.  A “Happy Buck” was offered by Sharon Kollman for being back from Florida and 80 degree weather.  President Dave reminded everyone that the Evening Kiwanis Club Annual Spaghetti Dinner is this week, Wednesday, November 13th, at the Eagle’s Club.  If you attend let Glen Treml know and you’ll get an attendance credit as this will probably qualify as an InterClub.  Chris Serres was the winner of the 50/50 Raffle drawing and she drew a Three of Diamonds, not a winner.  Next week’s game will have 44 cards with eight pay cards and a pot of at least $101.

Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Fond du Lac

Karissa Schneider, Director of Operations, and Pam Sippel, Johnsonville Unit Director, at our local Boys & Girls Clubjoined us on Monday to talk about what’s new at the Boys & Girls Club.  Karissa started by outlining their mission; The Mission of the Boys & Girls Club is dedicated to empowering all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens through academic, social and emotional support.  Karissa also told us that there are no income restrictions on membership in the Boys & Girls Club so anyone can join and participate.

Pam talked about their three After School Programs at the Johnsonville After School Clubhouse with satellite After School programs at Pier and Chegwin Elementary Schools.  Transportation is provided on regular school days to the various after school programs.  Homework help and enrichment programs are offered on a nightly basis at all of the sites.  Enrichment programming at the Johnsonville Club may include access to YMCA facilities like the dance studios, swimming pools and/or gymnasiums.  A nutritious meal is offered to all members each night at no cost.

There is also a Summer Program that runs out of the Johnsonville Club location that runs for a ten week period from 9:00AM – 5:00PM.  There is also a Teen Center program that operates out of the Johnsonville Club location during the school year in the evening for 6th through 12th graders.
