Donna Altepetea – Grief Relief

Donna is the new director of Grief Relief. This program is part of Agnesian Bereavement Support Program. Grief Relief serves children who have had loss in of a close family member. It offers support to both kids and parents. They are also on call to help children in the school system with a loss of a fellow student. The bereavement program started with the hospice program and has grown to cover any death in the hospital or nursing home. The club donated $300 to buy a case of special books for the kids to use in their support groups. The photo is attached. The book was developed by United Healthcare. They also host a two day camp for their kids. Last year they had forty kids at Cedar Valley for the camp. Our own Gary ring was one of the volunteers. Gary also helps with one of the support groups. They always need additional volunteers 907-3940. Their big fund raiser is April 14th at the K/C Hall.

Monday Morning

There were 20 members at our Monday meeting along with our guest speaker Dr. Brenda Grass.  “Happy Bucks” were offered by Vickie Goldapske for her 20 years as a Kiwanian, Jackie King for her 15 year old granddaughter’s successful bear hunt with her Grandpa and Glen Treml for being back from several meetings away and also for his new granddaughter, Kori Grace.  The 50/50 raffle drawing was back and Chris Serres was the winner and she drew the Queen of Hearts and therefore won the pot.  The pot was $351 so Chris walks away with $175.50.  Congratulations Chris, don’t spend it all in one place.  Next Monday’s 50/50 Raffle will start over with 52 cards in the game including the nine pay cards.

Dr. Brenda Grass – Reach Out and Read Wisconsin

Dr. Brenda Grass from Agnesian HealthCare joined us on Monday to talk about the Reach Out and Read Program in Fond du Lac.  The national Reach Out and Read Program began in 1989 in Boston, MA by a group of medical residents that recognized the need to encourage reading by children at a very early age.  This program is designed for the 6 months to five year old child.  The national organization builds on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers to develop essential early literacy skills in young children via the existing healthcare infrastructure.  Each year Reach Out and Read serves over four million children across all 50 states, focusing on those in low-income families.

The Wisconsin Chapter of Reach Out and Read currently has over 146 clinic locations, representing 46 clinics or clinic systems in 45 counties, more than 1,000 physicians, nurse practioners and physician assistants and they serve more than 57,200 children annually.  The program distributes over 100,200 new, developmentally appropriate books annually in the State of Wisconsin.

Sharon Kollman and Dawn Scannell from the Young Children Priority One Committee presented Dr. Grass with a donation of $900 to help fund this wonderful program to help improve the literacy of our community’s youngsters.

Monday Morning

We had 19 members at our Monday morning meeting along with a four member InterClub from the Oshkosh Mid-Morning, the daughter of one of the visiting Kiwanians, Gail Luttenberger and Wayne Cress, a possible new member checking out our Club.  Gary Miller announced a successful InterClub to Ripon Early Birds last Wednesday.  “Happy Bucks” were offered by Charlene Pettit ($2), one for a great vacation and the other for a warm ballgame on Sunday, Bonnie Baerwald to honor all the hot weather warriors who went to the Rattler’s game on Sunday, a member of the Oshkosh Mid-Morning Club for visiting us and because her daughter was cooperative in joining her and finally another Oshkosh Mid-Morning member because she’s going on vacation.  Jim Freiberg was the 50/50 Raffle drawing winner but unfortunately he drew the Six of Clubs, which was a non-winner.  Next week’s drawing will have 28 cards with five pay cards and a pot of at least $320.  Now we’re getting into real money!!

Dan Leeds, Young Children Priority One

Our scheduled speaker wasn’t able to attend on Monday so Dan Leeds talked about the origin of the local Swaddle Sack Program by all three Fond du Lac Kiwanis Clubs.  With almost a thousand births in the three hospitals under Agnesian HealthCare’s sponsorship, each and every new baby receives a Kiwanis branded swaddle sack.  Dr. Karen Meyer, from the Evening Club, had the vision to promote the swaddle sacks as a means to ensure safe sleeping for infants.  She arranged for the manufacture of the swaddle sacks in China and they were shipped to Fond du Lac and inventoried at the hospital.  The cost was split amongst the three local Clubs.  This program has been operating for the last three years.  Dan also provided a brief overview of the donations we’ve made over the years for the Parenting Newsletter through Agnesian HealthCare and the UW Extension.
