Monday Morning

We had 19 members for our Monday meeting back at the Retlaw Hotel.  Our program speakers were members Donna and Gary Miller.  Vickie Goldapske noted that her clinic was participating in the Save-A-Sole Challenge in conjunction with the Salvation Army and Payless Shoes.  Donations for this effort can be dropped off at Vickie’s clinic on South Park Avenue.  Gary Miller is looking for program ideas for the last two Mondays in August and all of September if you can help him out.  Glen Treml was the 50/50 Raffle drawing winner on Monday. Unfortunately he drew the Two of Diamonds, which was a non-winner.  Next week’s drawing will have 31 cards with five pay cards and a pot of at least $265.  Multiple members also received door prizes from Donna and Gary from the International Convention.

Gary & Donna Miller, Kiwanis International Convention Report

Donna and Gary Miller provided Monday’s program recapping the recent Kiwanis International Convention held in downtown Indianapolis.  Donna started by saying that this was her first International Convention as an authorized delegate of our Club even though she’s attended previous conventions as Gary’s guest.  Donna noted that women were first allowed into Kiwanis in 1987 and the first female president will assume her role in 2017, 30 years after they were allowed to join this international service organization.  Donna noted that there were 3,000 delegates at the International Convention but only 1,300 actually took part in the voting on the various issues that were presented.  Gary summarized the various amendments that were presented with the most significant being a dues increase of $10 and a rejection of web based voting on International amendments.  Gary also gave an update on the Eliminate Project to date.

What’s Going to Happen to Lakeside Park?

Monday Morning

We had a better turnout of 18 members at our Monday meeting even with the bitter cold.  Our scheduled program wasn’t able to attend due to a medical emergency.  Happy Bucks were offered by Charlene Pettit for the extra minutes of daylight we’re getting each day so it’s a little lighter in the mornings on her way to babysit her grandchildren and by Dan Leeds, even though he didn’t have an extra $1, for the birth of his second grandchild on the same date as his first grandchild.  Charlene noted that the Social Committee is organizing an after Project Linus gathering for drinks once a new date has been set.  Gary Miller was the 50/50 Raffle winner this week and he drew the Two of Hearts, a non-winner.  Next week’s drawing will have 43 cards with eight pay cards and a pot of at least $114.

Lakeside Park Survey

Since our scheduled program wasn’t able to attend, Gary Miller took the opportunity to talk about the current efforts underway to get input on future uses of Lakeside Park.

The Lakeside Park Exploratory Committee is seeking input from citizens, requesting they take a survey on the use of the park.  The results will help the committee understand how people use Lakeside Park and may identify improvements that might lead to more usage.

Paper copies of the survey are available at Fond du Lac City County Government Center, Fond du Lac Public Library and Fond du Lac Senior Center. Completed surveys may be dropped into a box at each location.

The survey can also be taken online and must be completed by Jan. 15.

Gary encouraged everyone to take the time to provide input to help the City Council in their deliberations on how to best position Lakeside Park for the future.

Monday Morning

We had 16 members back at the Retlaw Hotel on Monday morning.  Bonnie Baerwald started the sign-up sheet for the Relay for Life Brat Fry.  Charlene Pettit circulated a sign-up sheet to gauge the possible interest in a “Music Under the Stars” outing.  Gary Miller had a “Happy Buck” in honor of a friend who passed away last week.  Glen Treml was the winner the 50/50 Raffle drawing on Monday but he drew the King of Spades, not a winner.  Next week’s drawing will have 18 cards with five pay cards and a pot of at least $469.

Gary Miller – Geocaching

Gary Miller brought us his own program on Geocaching after the arranged speaker fell through.  Gary’s been geocaching for about 2½ years and had a number of interesting tales to tell.

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.  The only necessities are a GPS device or a GPS-enabled mobile phone so that you can navigate to the cache, and a Geocaching.com Membership.  Geocaches can be found all over the world. It is common for geocachers to hide caches in locations that are important to them, reflecting a special interest or skill of the cache owner. These locations can be quite diverse. They may be at your local park, at the end of a long hike, underwater or on the side of a city street.

Gary noted that there are anywhere from 2.5M – 3M “geocaches” that are placed worldwide.  He also noted that there are several dozen geocachers in the Fond du Lac area.  Gary was asked was he does geocaching and he had several reasons.  First was that he found it to be a very enjoyable hobby and secondly, he has learned all kinds of things about the areas that he’s explored while geocaching.

Thanks Gary for an interesting and unique program.
