Monday Morning

We had 19 members for our Monday meeting back at the Retlaw Hotel.  Our program speakers were members Donna and Gary Miller.  Vickie Goldapske noted that her clinic was participating in the Save-A-Sole Challenge in conjunction with the Salvation Army and Payless Shoes.  Donations for this effort can be dropped off at Vickie’s clinic on South Park Avenue.  Gary Miller is looking for program ideas for the last two Mondays in August and all of September if you can help him out.  Glen Treml was the 50/50 Raffle drawing winner on Monday. Unfortunately he drew the Two of Diamonds, which was a non-winner.  Next week’s drawing will have 31 cards with five pay cards and a pot of at least $265.  Multiple members also received door prizes from Donna and Gary from the International Convention.

Gary & Donna Miller, Kiwanis International Convention Report

Donna and Gary Miller provided Monday’s program recapping the recent Kiwanis International Convention held in downtown Indianapolis.  Donna started by saying that this was her first International Convention as an authorized delegate of our Club even though she’s attended previous conventions as Gary’s guest.  Donna noted that women were first allowed into Kiwanis in 1987 and the first female president will assume her role in 2017, 30 years after they were allowed to join this international service organization.  Donna noted that there were 3,000 delegates at the International Convention but only 1,300 actually took part in the voting on the various issues that were presented.  Gary summarized the various amendments that were presented with the most significant being a dues increase of $10 and a rejection of web based voting on International amendments.  Gary also gave an update on the Eliminate Project to date.

Eliminate Project Update Presented to Kiwanis

Monday Morning
We had 22 members and two guests at our Monday meeting at our temporary location at Trinity Baptist Church. Joining us on Monday morning were Jackson Goldapske and our speaker, Steve Heinsen, from Kiwanis International. Gary Miller reported on the District Convention this past weekend attended by Gary & Donna Miller, Charlene Pettit, Gary & Lois Ring and Chris Serres. Happy Bucks were donated by Gary Ring for the District Convention, Mark Luttenberger for his recent vacation, his and Gail’s 59th birthdates and also their 38th year wedding anniversary, and Harry Schneider for his winning a portion of the third place prize at the recent Agnesian Hospice Golf Outing. Bob Kahl circulated a Thank You from his daughter, Joelle, for our sponsorship of their Relay for Life Team. Dave Lefeber was the 50/50 Raffle Winner (again and again) and he drew the Ace of Spades, not a winner (again). The next drawing will have 11 cards, four pay cards and a pot of at least $542.

Steve Heinsen, Kiwanis International
Steve Heinsen is the Kiwanis International Campaign Area Director for the Eliminate Project. He was in Racine this past weekend for the District Convention and agreed to be our program on Monday morning on his way to Manitowoc. Steve gave a brief background on the Eliminate Project and Kiwanis International’s efforts to eliminate Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus in many third world countries. Steve also talked about his personal observations during a recent trip to Cambodia as part of a joint Kiwanis/UNICEF delegation.

Thanks for Supporting Casino Night

About 90 gamers and a crew of dealers, money changers, ticket sellers, and staff at the Ramada Plaza Hotel made the WI-UM Casino Night January 28th a huge success. Almost $1,800 was earned for the Kiwanis International project to help ELIMINATE maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT) from the earth. This deadly disease steals the lives of 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women. The goal is to immunize more than 100 million mothers to protect their babies. Kiwanis International hopes to raise $110 million for this effort — the current worldwide service project for Kiwanis International.

Division 12 Lieutenant Governor Tonya Alling organized the night and had help from several others but she was credited by WI-UM Gov. Fred Dietze, who was on hand, with the success of the night. WI-UM Governor-Elect Lynn Messer was also on hand as was the WI-UM Foundation Chair, Michael Fitzpatrick.

Tonya said, “At a cost of $1.80 per person, with the money raised, nearly 1,000 women will be vaccinated against tetanus.” Attendees had the opportunity to try their luck at winning at blackjack, roulette, craps and other games. Each attendee was given play money for the night’s action and could purchase more to continue their playing. Snacks were provided, and the Ramada Plaza had a cash bar. Circle K students from Ripon College helped fetch drinks, and Key Club members from Fond du Lac High School and Horace Mann High School were available to run errands, sell more tickets, and assist during the evening.

WI-UM Executive Director Mark Finger also made an appearance, while members of several surrounding Kiwanis clubs helped make the evening a success.
